Why Dental Check-up and Cleaning Should Be a Priority

The Importance of Dental Check-Ups and Cleans

The average person simply cannot see or reach into the areas of the mouth where tooth or gum decay commonly occur.

The mouth has too many areas that are out of sight from the bathroom mirror. Flossing and brushing must be comprehensive and consistent to keep those areas clean, and it must be done blindly.

This is why tooth and gum decay develop without being caught.

One day, you manage to fit your toothbrush behind a tooth you haven’t before and experience immediate pain or bleeding in an area that has been quietly swelling and reddening over long period of time.

There comes a point when brushing, flossing and using mouth wash may not be enough to reverse the hidden effects of poor oral hygiene.

This is why it’s recommended that you make a dentist appointment every six months. A dentist takes care of those blind spots before they get worse.

Warning Signs of Oral Health Problems

Many people live with bad oral hygiene. They have gotten used to the symptoms. Since they brush their teeth, they mistakenly believe that the symptoms are normal, that the point of brushing is simply to temporarily elevate those symptoms.

Ideally, the symptoms would not have to be managed at all.

Want to know more about common signs of bad oral hygiene?

  • Bad breath (especially upon waking in the morning) is a sign that bacteria is flourishing in your mouth and on your tongue.
  • Reoccurring plague is a sign of bad oral hygiene, and ineffective tooth brushing.
  • Teeth being sensitive to cold or hot food may be a sign of tooth decay
  • Tooth cavities – dark spots on teeth that indicate tooth decay may need costly treatment.
  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing indicates gingivitis, a disease that inflames and infects gums. It is treatable by flossing and properly brushing if caught early enough. If gingivitis is not treated, it can lead to peritonitis, a more serious gum disease that requires more serious medical intervention.

What Happens in a Dentist Check-Up?

A standard dentist check-up is a routine procedure, you can expect one to play out in the following manner:

  1. Upon entering the dentist’s room, you are instructed to take a seat in a dentist patient’s chair. The chair is laid back, comfortable and positioned below a light that allows the dentist to see into your mouth.
  2. The dentist, using small tools such as mirrors to see behind the backs of your teeth, does a thorough inspection of your mouth and checks for cavities, gum diseases, tooth decay, plaque and more.
  3. Using a strong electric toothbrush, the dentist gives your teeth the best scrubbing they’ve had since the last time you went to the dentist, cleaning away plaque and other debris that is simply too difficult or dangerous to remove yourself at home.
  4. Finally, the dentist informs you of any concerns or problems that have come to light during your oral inspection. You are told how to proceed with those concerns.

Protect Your Teeth and Gums

Even if you do make the effort to take care of your teeth, you likely still need a regular dentist appointment to know that your teeth are free from decay and disease.

Good oral hygiene is difficult to maintain. There are spots in your mouth that you simply cannot see or reach.

You do not want to suffer painful tooth aches, gum bleedings or the process of removing decayed teeth. You do not want to pay expensive fees for serious dental procedures.

Luckily, booking regular dentist appointments and maintaining good oral hygiene at home by brushing twice a day, and flossing once a day, is going to go a long way to protect your teeth and ensure that you continue to smile brightly.
