Severe toothache or swelling: Rinse gently with warm salt water and take an appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever if needed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
Knocked-out tooth: Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. See a dentist immediately — the chance of saving the tooth drops quickly after the first hour.
Broken or chipped tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and save any broken pieces if possible. Avoid chewing on that side until you're seen.
Lost filling or crown: Keep the area clean and avoid sticky or hard foods until your appointment.
